14.1How accurate this is

Positions on the top come from the “Parts identification” plan in the MK2 operating instructions, scaled so the platter is the published 332 mm. That figure is close to true scale: it puts the arm pivot 213.7 mm from the spindle against Panasonic's 215 mm, and the top at 448 × 353 mm against 453 mm wide. Treat those positions as approximate. That cross-check does not establish a ±3 mm tolerance for every feature.

MK2 heights and small component profiles remain estimates. The M3D specimen now uses a measured 55 mm body, 27 mm exposed feet at the captured adjustment, approximately 11 mm platter rise, a 1.5 mm felt mat and a 30 × 30 mm counterweight. Its silver edge has a reported 2 mm chamfer and the black base a 15 mm lower-edge radius. The foot travel, diameters, sockets and fine profiles still need measurements. Those specimen readings do not establish factory dimensions for every M3D or alter the MK2 reference table below. The headshell now uses Panasonic's 52 mm connector-washer-to-stylus dimension. The circuit-board outline, component centres and transformer position come from a service photo rectified to the cabinet plane. Parts above that plane still have perspective error. Strobe dot counts are illustrative; the four indicated speeds are simulated.

Photo audit, 28 October 2026: the gimbal is an open frame; the headshell has mounting slots; the counterweight dial sits on the weight; the pitch cap has a saddle profile; the target lamp moves vertically; and the dust cover is a hollow shell. The platter has finger holes and a sloping strobe band with silver dots. These details improve recognition, but are not verified replacement-part geometry. The underside follows the early service drawing; later sets differ. Electronics and wiring are simplified.

14.2MK2 parts list

Names and numbers as printed in the MK2 replacement parts list. The specialists on the parts page stock these parts, and remake some of the discontinued ones.

14.3MK2 procedures

The same steps the model walks through. Arm height reading = cartridge height H in mm − 15, from Panasonic's table (H 15 mm → 0, H 21 mm → 6).

Oil the motor bearing

The only routine lubrication Panasonic specifies. The interval is long, about ten times a conventional motor's.

Needs: Panasonic oil SFWO010

Clamp the arm on its rest. Take off the dust cover.
Lift off the mat.
Lift the platter straight up. The motor magnet is fixed under it, so set it down where it cannot pick up iron filings or dust, and do not drop it. Never loosen the magnet screws.
Put 2 or 3 drops of oil into the bearing at the spindle. Once every 2,000 hours of use. Conventional motors need it every 200–500 hours.
Refit the platter on the spindle, then the mat.

Set the arm height for your cartridge

The arm should run level. Panasonic gives the ring reading for each cartridge height.

Measure your cartridge height H, stylus tip to the headshell mounting face. Find it in the table below.
Unlock the arm base lock knob.
Turn the height ring to the reading. Each number is 1 mm; half steps are marked. H = 17.5 mm goes halfway between 2 and 3.
Lock the arm base lock knob again. Panasonic's caution is specific about this.

Balance the arm and set tracking force

Zero the arm first, then dial the force on the ring. Anti-skate matches the force.

Fit the balance weight on the rear shaft. Cartridge over 10 g: add the auxiliary weight first (it covers 9.5–13 g).
Take the stylus guard off. Release the arm clamp and lift the arm off the rest.
Turn the whole weight until the arm floats level. Too far forward and the cartridge drops; too far back and it rises. Keep the stylus off the mat.
Clamp the arm. Hold the weight still and turn only the stylus-pressure ring to 0 on the shaft's centre line.
Turn the weight toward the pivot to the cartridge maker's tracking force. The ring reads in grams.
Set the anti-skate knob to the same number as the tracking force.

Set the cue-lift height

If the stylus clears the record by too much or too little when the lever is up.

Needs: Small hex driver

Raise the cueing lever. The stylus should be 8–13 mm above the record.
Press the arm lift down and turn its hex screw. The screw only turns freely while the lift is pressed. Clockwise lowers the stylus; counterclockwise raises it.
Let go and check that the hex head retracts back into the lift.

Open the platter well

The start of every motor or board job: the drive board, the stator and the transformer are all under the panel cover.

Remove the headshell, the mat and the platter.
Secure the arm with the arm clamp.
Remove the 5 screws of the panel cover and lift it out.

Recentre and recalibrate pitch

If 0% is not quartz-locked or the range is off. This is bench work with a frequency counter and a meter.

Needs: Frequency counter, multimeter

Open the platter well. For the gain adjustment the bottom cover comes off too.
Power on, 33⅓, pitch at 0 so the lamp lights. Counter + to TP27, − to earth. Adjust VR301 for 262.08 kHz ± 0.05 kHz.
Pitch at 0. Unplug CN102 from the drive board and put the meter across its pitch-board side. Adjust VR302 for 2.7 kΩ ± 0.1 kΩ.
Brake: adjust VR201 so the platter stops within the angle the manual gives after you press stop. The supplement says 90–120° at 33⅓; the main manual's electrical table says 120–270°.

The two brake figures come from two sections of the same scanned manual. We print both.

Take the bottom off

To reach the target-light lamp, the strobe LED, the pitch board and the underside of the arm.

Remove the mat and platter, clamp the arm, and turn the deck over on a soft cloth so the dust cover is not scratched.
Unscrew the 4 audio insulators, counterclockwise.
Remove the screws. Early sets: 17 screws and a spacer, then 11 more. Later sets: 21 setscrews on the bottom cover, then 6 on the bottom base.
Lift the bottom base away.

The screw counts changed in production. The service-manual supplement gives the later counts.

Replace the target-light lamp

The pop-up stylus illuminator uses a lamp that burns out.

Take the bottom off.
Remove the 2 screws of the stylus-illuminator lamp assembly.
Remove 1 more screw (service manual Fig. 6) and lift the lamp out.
