Who to call
Panasonic stopped supporting the classic line, but the aftermarket around it is deep and long-established, one of these has been working on nothing but 1200s since 2000, and is manufacturing parts Panasonic discontinued a decade ago. A broken 1200 is rarely a dead 1200.

Three routes, and the one number that decides them
Panasonic's arm is 230 mm effective length with 15 mm overhang, so its pivot sits 215 mm from the spindle. Almost no other 9″ arm wants 215 mm. That single mismatch is why fitting a different arm always means an armboard, and why the board is cut for one specific arm rather than sold as a universal adapter: its job is to move the pivot to whatever distance the new arm was designed around.
Before comparing anything else, check your deck is on the list. The machined armboards fit the MK2 onwards and the current G, GAE, GR, GR2 and SL-1300G. They do not fit the original SL-1200, and they do not fit the MK7 or SL-1500C. An MK7 owner's realistic options are the first two routes below.
12.1Keep the arm
Rule this in before spending. Most condemned 1200 arms have a wiring, lift or bearing-adjustment fault rather than a dead casting.

Worth ruling in before shopping. The failures that make people condemn a 1200 arm are usually the wiring, the lift height or bearing adjustment rather than the arm casting, and Panasonic specifies bearing friction under 7 mg in both axes as the number to judge it against. A tonearm that fails that test may need adjustment rather than replacement.[1] Technics operating instructions
12.2Put the same arm back
Geometry stays factory, nothing to align, nothing to machine. Limited by what is still in stock.

The only route that needs no armboard, no drilling and no re-alignment, because the geometry is the geometry the deck was designed around. Arms are sold as assemblies without the base. Stock for the classic decks is finite and several variants were already sold out when checked, which is the argument for buying the arm before you need it.[1] 1200s.com
12.3Fit a different arm
Always an armboard too, because the pivot has to move. The board is specific to the arm, not a generic adapter.

The recess is the point: it lets the popular 309, IV and V sit at their lowest limit rather than riding high on a deck that was never built to carry them.[1] Ammonite Audio

Fits most 9" Jelco-derived arms but not the SA-250ST, and the Ortofon AS-212R needs the improved mounting collar for its different bolt pattern. Much the cheapest way in, at roughly a third of the machined-alloy boards. One catch worth knowing before you buy: Rega arms using the 3-point mounting cannot use a threaded VTA adjuster.[1] Analogue Seduction

Boards exist for these too, in black and silver. The FR-64 is long out of production and bought used only.[1] Ammonite Audio
Prices are each supplier's own listing, checked August 2026, and they move. Two of these arms have no factory behind them any more: Jelco closed in spring 2020 after a century in business, and the Fidelity Research FR-64 has been out of production far longer. Both are used-market purchases, so budget for a service.
