SL-1200 (MK1)1972–1978The original. A hi-fi deck that disco and radio DJs hijacked, the accident that started everything.

Released October 1972 as "The Middle Class Player System," it grew out of Shuichi Obata's direct-drive work at Matsushita; the SP-10 of 1969, then the consumer SL-1100. Never designed for DJs, but its torque and speed control won over disco and radio almost immediately. An armless sibling, the SL-120, served broadcast.
Changes from predecessor, First of the line. Direct-drive motor derived from the SL-1100, integrated S-shaped tonearm, die-cast aluminum cabinet.
